<image:title>Blogs - Anger into Action - But if that’s all we do, we’re in trouble. Chronic anger or stress that keeps us in a fight-or-flight state can lead to chronic health conditions such as heart disease, digestive issues and strokes, mental health problems like depression and anxiety, and cognitive impairment and brain fog.</image:title>
<image:caption>We are all familiar with the feeling of making bad decisions when we’re angry or stressed – snapping at people we love, rushing work that needed more time and attention, skipping exercise or time outdoors that we know is good for our mood. Anger is helpful for letting us know that something needs to change. But it’s not a helpful place to take the positive decisions, make the plans, and build the relationships that we need to bring about that change. So we can’t stay in the anger phase. We have to move past it – into action. It often feels like the things we’re angry about are beyond our control. The people in power making the decisions that cause these issues feel like they’re a million miles away.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - The Promise of Small Things: Snowdrops, Gratitude and Hope - I’ve been drawn to snowdrops more than ever this year. From my study window I can see a patch of them and I watch their dainty heads dance in the wind. I’ve found myself looking out for glimpses of them when I’m out and about. They are so fragile looking yet are remarkably hardy. Often called the ‘flower of hope’, snowdrops have the ability to bloom in the harshest conditions. They are a small but powerful reminder of resilience and renewal and the promise of what’s to come.</image:title>
<image:caption>I’ve always found comfort and hope in the ‘small’. The snowdrop being one such thing, another example is the acorn. Acorns are again a symbol of hope, strength and endurance. I find it amazing that that small seed, with time, develops into a strong, mighty, oak tree. Such things give me hope that when I’m feeling small, deep within me, like a snowdrop bulb or acorn submerged in the dark earth, there is the potential of an inner hidden strength which can emerge and overcome challenges. It is a reminder that growth can happen even in the most unlikely conditions and that beauty can emerge from hardship.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Reflections on Lent and Ramadan: Shared Journeys of Faith and Renewal - For Christians, Lent is far more than a mere historical commemoration; it is a deeply spiritual time marked by reflection, prayer, and repentance. Many see Lent as an opportunity for spiritual preparation leading up to Easter Sunday, the day that celebrates the resurrection of Jesus—a central moment in the Christian faith. During Lent, believers are encouraged to take stock of their lives, seek forgiveness, and renew their relationship with God. This period is often characterised by self-denial or sacrifice; people may ‘give something up’ such as chocolate, alcohol, or social media, using the act of abstention as a form of discipline and devotion. Others choose to fast or to eat more simply, thereby reminding themselves of those who have less and cultivating gratitude and humility.</image:title>
<image:caption>However, Lent is not solely about giving things up. Many choose to take something up instead—perhaps engaging in acts of kindness, volunteering in their communities, or spending more time supporting those in need. It’s also common for Christians to become more intentional about their prayer life, or to devote additional time to reading the Bible, seeking deeper understanding and connection. In essence, Lent is a time for personal and collective renewal, encouraging individuals to reflect on their lives, make positive changes, and draw closer to God and to others.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Legacies of Inequality - Remnants of the life that may have been recognisable to the Ton of Bridgerton still stand – perhaps most notably the Bear Pit in Headingley, once part of a zoological gardens opened in 1837 for the leisure of the wealthy. But, sadly, the buildings of the Regency era aren’t all that remains today from the Leeds of the past – the parts of the city that were once a playground for the super-rich were matched by dark, dirty slums in the South of the city, where rich North Leeds residents never dared to venture.</image:title>
<image:caption>The city’s wealth was built on the backs of the working classes who flooded to the city during the industrial revolution; but the huge economic disparity of the time has left a legacy of inequality today that still shapes life in the city for many of us living here now. Leeds is now one of the most unequal cities in the country, with data from the last census showing that 34% of Leeds primary school pupils live in areas in the 10% most deprived nationally.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Hopes for 2026 - My new year’s resolutions this year are simple: sing more, swim more, stay at home more. Simple ways I want to be better connected with my community and with my body, to nurture creativity, and to prioritise rest.</image:title>

One of my favourite internet humans Leena Norms made this video about moving beyond personal resolutions, and using the new year to commit to better ways of living for the planet, and for our global community.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - New Year’s Resolutions - The Methodist Church offers a distinctive approach to New Year renewal through their Covenant Service. Often taking place in January, this service invites people to renew their covenant relationship with God. (What’s a ‘covenant’ you may ask? Well, it’s like an agreement, or contract, like one made in marriage for example.) The Covenant Prayer which is central to the Covenant service, is a prayer which expresses a willingness to be wholly available to God, irrespective of personal desires or circumstances. It reads:</image:title>
<image:caption>“I am no longer my own but yours. Your will, not mine, be done in all things, wherever you may place me, in all that I do and in all that I may endure; when there is work for me and when there is none; when I am troubled and when I am at peace. Your will be done when I am valued and when I am disregarded; when I find fulfilment and when it is lacking; when I have all things, and when I have nothing. I willingly offer all I have and am to serve you, as and where you choose. “Glorious and blessed God, Father, Son and Holy Spirit, you are mine and I am yours. May it be so for ever. Let this covenant now made on earth be fulfilled in heaven. “Amen.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Polarisation and Putting Christ back into Christmas - In the background of this, the Leeds Craftivists have been exploring the links between racial justice and climate justice. We have been learning about the unfair impact of climate breakdown on racially minoritised communities; how countries in the Global South are already living in disastrous weather events, and communities here are paying the price. Claude Hendrickson shared with us the unseen impact it can have on people living in this country when communities with family links around the world are worried or sending money to relatives experiencing hurricanes, flooding, drought, etc. This Autumn, Storm Melissa devastated communities in Jamaica, and affected people in this country with family links to the Caribbean in ways that the rest of us simply don’t see.</image:title>
<image:caption>As weather becomes more extreme, and resources become more scarce, it won’t only be our neighbours who are affected - migration and the number of people seeking asylum is likely to increase, and in our current state of climate emergency, we in the Global North must urgently become more resilient and more aware of the debt we owe to our global neighbours.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Blue Christmas - Christmas can be difficult for so many reasons. It’s portrayed as a joyful and magical time, filled with love, family and celebrations. Yet, while the world seems to sparkle with happiness, the reality for some is loneliness, grief or stress. There can be pressure to feel merry, but in reality, not everyone does. For those who are missing loved ones, facing hardship, or carrying emotional pain, the season can magnify those feelings. The contrast between what we see around us and what we feel inside can be difficult. Financial pressures and the weight of expectations – to give, to host, to be joyful – can add even more strain.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Pets and Mental Health - There were times as a young person struggling with my mental health that I can wholeheartedly say that my pets kept me going; they were relying on me to feed them, take them out for walks, play with them, cuddle them - how could I say no to them? For the longest time they were my motivation to get out of bed every day, my motivation to go out for fresh air when I wouldn't have wanted to go outside, and my motivation to give them cuddles when I felt unworthy of care. Now that I am well and thriving, my pets are who I look forward to seeing every day and who give me unconditional love, they are my best friends! I will never forget the strength my pets gave me when I was unwell and I will be forever grateful that they were part of what got me through my most difficult times in life.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Finding Stillness in Advent: Embracing the Quiet Gifts of the Season - In the Christian calendar, we’re about to enter Advent, a season so often overshadowed by the rush and glimmer and noise of our Christmas preparations. But Advent calls us to slow down and pay attention – to the world, to ourselves, to the quiet hope that lies in waiting. The ever-shortening days and longer dark nights can feel daunting, but they also offer a gentle reminder that there is beauty and depth to be found in stillness. Psalm 46:10 says, ‘Be Still and know that I am God’. This encourages us to let go of our anxieties and busyness and be still in God’s presence. Taking time each day to pause and to be still – be it through a walk in the fresh air, mindful breathing, or simply sitting in a quiet room in your favourite chair is a gentle act of self care; nourishment for the journey ahead. I wonder what helps you to be still? One of the things that helps me to slow down and pause is to knit. If you are that way inclined why not join in this Advent knitalong from Victoria Methodist Church in Bristol – each day you will get part of a pattern for a scarf together with a reflection, a reason to pause each day.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Chosen Family - The notion of “chosen family” has been around for a while. One example of this is Godparents, who may not be blood related, but agree to share responsibility for the child’s spiritual life and wellbeing. Another example is the “auntie” – who’s usually a close family friend, and for much of a person’s childhood, is treated as part of the family. So, does family need to rely on blood and genetics? As children, we accept people as family because they’re there, not necessarily because we understand they’re blood related.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Living by a Rule of Life - I wonder what you think of when you hear the word ‘rule’. As someone who has a shadow side which likes to be rebellious and break rules, when I first became part of the MDO, I wasn’t too keen on the phrase ‘Rule of Life’. Maybe I just don’t like to be told what to do! However, according to their definition, rules are something that are generally considered good for us because they provide a sense of order, predictability and safety. They should help maintain fairness and peace and serve as a framework for behaviour, ensuring accountability and respect.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Start Here: Place, Activism and Solidarity - As we unpack the deep links between climate justice and racial justice, we’re learning how close to home this hits. People of colour in the UK are over 50% more likely to be in fuel poverty than their white neighbours, while companies established through the colonial period like BP and Shell announce eye-watering profits*. Given stats like these, it simply can’t just be white activists at the table discussing climate breakdown.</image:title>
<image:caption>We asked what we could do to invite diverse communities into our (mostly white) craftivism group. But Claude said we’d got it all wrong – we need to get out of our comfort zones and go to them. His invitation to us was to go and meet in places where diverse communities feel at home. It was a wake-up call. At our next session, we’re looking for new local community centres to meet in. A tiny first step to show we’re serious about solidarity.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Start Here: Place, Activism and Solidarity - If you’d been walking down The Headrow a few Tuesdays ago, you may have spotted seven people peering down at a small bit of wall outside Leeds Art Gallery. Historian and artist Clifford Stead was leading us on a Sketch Walk, learning about the history of war and peace-making in Leeds. I was shocked to learn that this little section of wall bore scars I’d never noticed before – from bombs dropped during World War Two. Standing in that spot, touching the deep craters in the Yorkshire stone, learning new things about the city I’ve called home for thirteen years – I felt more connected to my local community than ever. The streets we walk down every day are steeped in history, and taking time to notice and sketch the place we live was transformative. It made the conflicts going on around the world today suddenly feel a lot closer to home, and inspired me more than ever to take action for peace.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Sanctuary - The dictionary defines sanctuary as a place of protection or safety. The word comes from the Latin ‘sanctus’ meaning ‘holy’.</image:title>
<image:caption>Sanctuary is a place of refuge where we feel safe - a physical place – but it is also something deeper; an inner, spiritual place where God dwells with us. A sacred interior space where the physical place is in communion with the eternal. A space where we are simply ‘being’. Herman Hesse would argue that we don’t have to have a physical place for sanctuary, for “within you there is a stillness and sanctuary to which you can retreat anytime and be yourself”.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Creativity to Change the World - Community is vital</image:title>
<image:caption>Gabor Maté says, “Safety is not the absence of threat, it’s the presence of connection.” If we want to create safer communities, and reduce our anxiety in the face of the many dangers in our society, then we need to seek connection with others, and particularly those who are different from ourselves. Creative hobbies bring people together – sharing knitting pattern recommendations in the yarn shop, learning new stitch techniques, and even finding an online global community in knitting forums and podcasts, all fosters a sense of unity around a common love of crafting. And this can be true of any creative outlet like joining your local gardening group, sketch club, DnD campaign, or creative writing circle. You may not make lots of new friends for life, but small encounters with people outside your usual social circle can only be a positive thing in our increasingly individualised society.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Creativity to Change the World - Imagining a better world</image:title>
<image:caption>When we create something, we start with nothing. Looking at a fresh skein of yarn, it could become anything I want to set my needles to – a pair of socks, a beautiful hat, a cosy jumper. Sometimes I have odds and ends and scraps left over, and it takes some resourceful thinking to imagine how I can use it well. The big challenges we’re facing right now – the climate crisis, polarisation, inequality, will take all of our best creative thinking to overcome, so getting into the habit of looking sideways at the problems in front of us, and dreaming up what we can do with the simple supplies in front of us, is excellent practice for dreaming up a better tomorrow.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Cuppas and Communities - Of all the varying ways of enjoying tea, there are just as many ways to enjoy coffee. From the sugar foam (or espuma) that characterises a Cuban coffee to Greek coffees brewed in pots over scorching sand, there are so many ways to prepare coffee. Australia is king of the flat white while North America is mainly associated with Starbucks and the infamous pumpkin spiced latte. Even hot chocolate has strong historical traditions in Mexican culture, though the way it was first processed and consumed would be unrecognisable to many people today.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Cuppas and Communities - At Leeds Sanctuary, community and connection are at the heart of everything we do. In Leeds, we have some amazing independent cafes and businesses that create the perfect space for relaxed socialising, comfort and connection. With this in mind, we have designed a casual drop-in service and partnered with some unique local businesses who hold community at their heart. We’ll be offering board games, colouring books and some other quiet social activities in an informal and welcoming environment. I’ll be on hand if you want to chat, whether you’ve had a rough day/ week/ month, or you just want to talk about the new series you’re binging, everyone is welcome.</image:title>
<image:caption>Pop in and see us for a cuppa and a chat! No-one will be turned away for lack of funds - please let us know if you’d like us to get you a brew.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Crafting Peace with Leeds Craftivists - Our action was intentionally creative, delicate and beautiful. An olive branch has long been a symbol of peace and reconciliation, rooted in Middle Eastern religion (including Christianity) and well-known across many cultures. We are mindful, of course, of the war in Gaza, but also of conflict and oppression which continues in other parts of the world, and we want to stand with the many innocent people affected by the harmful decisions and actions of a few with power. We are also mindful of the effects on people living and working in our local communities here in Leeds, some of whom have experienced abuse and isolation as a result of what is happening abroad.</image:title>
<image:caption>We researched the people behind the arms fair – the three directors of a company called Clarion Events. We looked into the ways they financially profit from the arms fair, but also from other events like funfairs and baby shows , trying to understand their mindset. Perhaps they see this as just another strand of their business, but what does it take to ignore the moral implications of hosting a huge international arms fair?</image:caption>

<image:caption>“My life has come full circle back to being an activist. In the late 1970s I worked with the then very new organisation, Traidcraft. With them, I visited craft producers in Bangladesh and Calcutta, building awareness of the need for fair trade and the development of local cooperatives. I sold thousands of pounds worth of craft and food goods: on Leeds Market, in homes, fairs and churches, finally establishing the first fairtrade shop in Leeds. Only recently, Traidcraft went out of business, after decades establishing the fair trade movement, but its education and campaigning arm morphed into the organisation, “Transform Trade” www.transform-trade.org It’s their campaign for a UK Fashion Watchdog, which Leeds Craftivists have taken up for January to March 2025.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Barriers to Exercise - When I speak to people about keeping physically healthy, I often hear people say, with a familiar guilty tone, “I know I should exercise more”. It always makes me wonder where the guilt comes from and who it is they feel they are failing. My interest in this aspect of wellbeing has always been not in teaching people what they “should” do, but in understanding why, if we already know the importance of exercise (and yes, I’m including myself here!), we simply don’t do it.</image:title>
<image:caption>This blog is a combination of academic research and themes I’ve identified that have emerged from conversations in wellbeing sessions. Maybe you will recognise some of these issues in your own life, so I want to offer you some simple, real life, sustainable solutions to prioritise your physical health, ease the guilt, and get you moving.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - What is Gentle Activism? - I often wonder what good craftivism is doing. Any action we take can feel insignificant against the swirling chaos outside our four walls, and threading my needle or putting paintbrush to paper can feel counterintuitive. It’s slow, it’s gentle, it’s deliberate – it doesn’t feel like an adequate response to the scale of any of these issues.</image:title>
<image:caption>And yet, I have faith that craftivism is an essential string in the activist’s bow.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Finding your Tribe - In his book, “Friends: understanding the power of our most important relationships”, Robin Dunbar shares seven traits that we look for when we make friends: The same language (or dialect) Growing up in the same location Having the same educational or career experience Having the same hobbies and interests Having the same world view (religious, moral and/or political) Having the same musical tastes Having the same sense of humour</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Healthy Sleep - It’s well-established that sleep is essential to our physical and mental health. But despite its importance, many people find hemselves regularly deprived of quality sleep, and are notably sleepy during the day.</image:title>
<image:caption>Healthy sleeping habits are known as “sleep hygiene”. Implementing many of these at once can be overwhelming, so try starting with one or two and work your way through them to find out what works for you. There are four areas of sleep hygiene you need to consider: Creating a Sleep-Inducing Bedroom Optimizing Your Sleep Schedule Crafting a Pre-Bed time Routine Fostering Pro-Sleep Habits During the Day</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Communities cross paths to inspire joy and justice - The evening began with an opportunity to hear from the guest panel, who were Sir John Battle, former MP for Leeds West; Revd Ian Rutherford, Faith Sector Lead on Homelessness and Housing, and on Food Security for Mayor Andy Burnham in Manchester; Deacon Kerry Scarlett of the Methodist Church, co-founder of the Adavu Project in Birmingham, and Samra Said, Senior Producer at Arts & Homelessness International. The panel inspired us with stories of times that they have seen communities find a voice; times they have supported people with lived experiences of inequality towards finding a way to respectfully challenge the causes, and how they’ve worked towards campaign wins and co-creation of policy which will change people’s experiences in the future.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Out of the Ordinary - A Prayer for Leeds - I am so grateful to be living in Leeds. This one has held me in its care for the last decade. It has been a place of personal and family challenge, blessing, misunderstanding and hopeful realisation. A place of warmth and hospitality, fear and ill health. I love it for its vibrancy, its art, culture and sport, its hidden gems of gardens amidst the throbbing city, and wide-open parks of green. Most of all I love it for its people, a mass of potential, a wealth of experience and knowledge. An overwhelming treasure, far greater than any grand civic building or shopping spree. We are all the beating heart of this gathering of humankind. Leeds is home and I am blessed indeed. Thank you, God.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - Out of the Ordinary - A Reflection on Leeds - Firstly, it reminds me that Leeds is really not flat! Also, as someone who is a Southerner by birth but made Leeds my adopted home over 30 years ago, it makes me feel connected to the city. Leeds is many things all at once, and it isn’t for one type of person. The phrase that comes to mind when I look at that view is “all human life is here”.</image:title>

The student inhabitants of those terraced houses change every year; once they were me, my friends and my husband, now they are my children. Young people and the student experience has changed in so many ways but the excitement, anxiety, and vulnerability of young people starting independent lives remains.</image:caption>

<image:title>Blogs - Out of the Ordinary - A Reflection on Leeds - The two photos illustrate how the same view can be the same and yet so different at different times of day, on different days, in different years. On the surface these pictures and this street may look ordinary, but to me they remind me why I love this beautiful, consistent, ever changing, Out of the Ordinary place.</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - City buzzing thanks to successful Craftivism campaign - As our city has developed, Leeds Craftivists (a community of Leeds Sanctuary) noticed that there was a distinct lack of biodiversity in our city centre, which can create short-term and longer-term issues for both human and ecological health. We decided to join in with the RSPB “Attack on Nature” campaign, and invited other local people to craft two bees – one to be sent to their local MP, with a letter encouraging them to take action in both nurturing and protecting biodiversity, and the second to be sent to Leeds Craftivists as part of a collective local “ask” to create a pollinator corridor in our city centre. We are so pleased to say that Leeds City Council were really receptive to the campaign, and began planting wildflower seeds in planters around the city at the beginning of June!</image:title>

<image:title>Blogs - City buzzing thanks to successful Craftivism campaign - Biodiversity isn’t just about wildlife, but all life on earth. Humans, animals, plants – our entire eco-system – cannot flourish without it. Living in ecological community is essential for clean air and water, and our immediate health; as well as longer term food security and the abilities of individual species of wildlife to thrive. Wildflowers provide food for bees, butterflies and other pollinators, and so planting them in our city centre will support biodiversity across Leeds. You can listen to a discussion about the value of biodiversity on the Leeds Sanctuary Podcast.</image:title>

<image:title>Events - Blue Christmas - Leeds Sanctuary would love to welcome you to a Blue Christmas service on Tuesday 09 December at 5.30pm. We recognise that for many people, Christmas creates complicated emotions. It can be a very exciting time with opportunities for much joy, but it can also enhance feelings of grief, anxiety and loneliness. Mass celebration at a time when many are unable to celebrate, perhaps due to poverty or war, can also raise feelings of guilt, and holding these emotions together can be overwhelming and exhausting. Our Blue Christmas service will be an opportunity to acknowledge and reflect on these emotions through quiet moments and creativity, with live music. Doors will open at 5.15pm, and the service will run from 5.30pm - 6.30pm. We'll be serving mulled wine, hot drinks and mince pies at the end, so please do let us know if you intend to come so that we can make sure there are enough refreshments for everybody.</image:title>

<image:title>Events - War and Peace - A Sketch Walk - Gather with us and local artist and historian, Clifford Stead, to explore the history of conflict and peacebuilding in the city of Leeds. In honour of International Peace Day, we will be curating a relaxed, creative environment where you can learn what the history of Leeds has to tell us in our divided world. We'll be meeting in Nelson Mandela Gardens in Leeds city centre at 5.30pm on Tuesday 23 September. No prior experience or knowledge of either history or sketching is required, and we'll provide you with a sketchbook and pencil!</image:title>
