Ethical shopping is almost impossible…

Lately me and my friends were discussing at length what washing powder we use (our 30s have hit us hard!!) and there were just so many factors to consider.

Is it in recyclable packaging? Does it come in a pod that contains plastic? Does it contain chemicals that will harm wildlife? How far will it have to travel to reach my home? Are the ingredients responsibly sourced? Were the people who made it treated and paid fairly? And all that’s before you even ask the question of whether it cleans your clothes well…

Wouldn’t it be easier if we knew that all UK businesses were committed to preventing harm to people and planet? That’s what the Good Business Matters coalition are asking for in their No More Profit From Harm campaign.

Over 50 campaigning organisations such as Friends of the Earth, Transform Trade, the Fairtrade Foundation, and Amnesty International have joined together to call for a new law that will protect people and the environment from harm throughout the supply chains of businesses operating in the UK.

The Leeds Craftivists are joining this campaign by creating the “Labels we’d like to see” on our items – “free from harm”, “water quality protected”, “no forced labour” and more messages are being carefully stitched onto labels to take to a Mass Lobby of Parliament on 21st October.
